We need to save education from those in a hurry to Indianise it (“Batra’s panel to ‘Indianise’ education,” July 30). They have forgotten the wisdom in the ancient dictum: let noble thoughts come to us from every side. We need to save education from those for whom textbooks are meant to propagate ideology rather than to provide opportunities for students’ skill development process. It would be a disservice to our students, who are poised to live in a shrinking global village, to shut their minds to everything non-Indian. How are allusions, anecdotes, references and moral lessons from non-native traditions unacceptable, while those from Indian scriptures are cultural and as such acceptable in our textbooks and classrooms?

One wonders whether Indian education will henceforth be guided by Mr. Batra’s vision. The distortions in the textbooks promoted by the RSS leader are not only comical but also belong to the realm of fantasy. It remains to be seen if Prime Minister Narendra Modi will step in to tackle the problem that the move poses.
