It is clear that India needs to do a lot of homework in facing up to a potential Ebola outbreak (“ >For an Indian pivot in the Ebola fight ,” Sept. 22). If some of 45,000 Indians living in the affected West African regions started coming back to India, there could be a potential crisis at hand. The fact is that awareness regarding Ebola is poor. The need of the hour is to ensure the wide dissemination of proper information on this dreadful disease. As the writer has suggested, the large Indian medical talent pool must be utilised.

This is an ideal opportunity for the Indian medical fraternity to gain first-hand experience of the challenges faced in containing such a disease within a weak public health framework. This will also help generate tremendous goodwill for India in Africa. Helping fight a disease at its source is much better than trying to contain an outbreak at home.
