The editorial, “Perfect ill-timing” (March 22) has exposed the utter disingenuousness on the part of the CBI in carrying out the raids at the residence of DMK leaders M.K. Stalin and M.K. Alagiri. The expression of displeasure by the Prime Minister and some other Ministers notwithstanding, the fact that the investigating agency was silent all the while on the reported charges of tax-evasion by the leaders hardly substantiates its claims of professionalism and independence.
The timing of the raid caused immense and widespread consternation in political circles. All are equal before the law and, therefore, the CBI is expected to proceed against those charged with wrongdoing, whoever they are. That said, one wonders what prevented the investigating agency from initiating action against the two DMK leaders for so long.
