This refers to the report on Kaiga heavy water leak (Nov. 30). The government has simply washed its hands of the incident terming the leak an “inside job.” However, important questions remain unanswered and inquiries need to be done. One does not know the exact cause of leakage but it is clear that either it is the work of a disgruntled employees or failure of the power plant management. Either way, the outcome is horrendous. The sensitive eco-system of the Western Ghats, the river Kali, the employees of the plant and the pristine flora and fauna found in the region have all been exposed to danger because “someone added tritiated heavy water in the water cooler.”

Are we ready to provide enough security to the animal and plant kingdom? Or, are we still awaiting greater tragedies?
