Heavy cost of Siachen

February 08, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 12:00 am IST

I hail from a family in which there are a number of defence personnel and I feel strongly about the tragedy (“Tragedy could trigger demilitarisation”, Feb.7). It is a fact that officers, off the record, will tell you that having the right equipment can do much to save lives. Examples are soldiers being provided with inflatable jackets to create air cushions around them in case of an avalanche and portable oxygen supplies. Radio beacons must also be a part of a soldier’s equipment. For their families, the loss of a breadwinner is irreparable (Some editions – “Soldier’s death leaves family in lurch”, Feb.7).
