I am shocked beyond endurance to learn that my benefactor and sympathiser G. Kasturi is no more. His demise is a great loss to The Hindu. To me, particularly, this tragic loss is irreparable. Mr. Kasturi guided me at every stage of my long career of 41 years in the prestigious newspaper.

When I was appointed Assistant Editor by the illustrious K. Srinivasan, he asked me what my special contribution to the business section would be. I suggested that there could be a daily column for discussing corporate affairs, money market developments and the like. The young and gentle Kasturi was present during the discussion and told me that the column could not appear anonymously or under my personal name. He suggested that I use a pen name. After reflecting for a moment, I said LEO could be the pen name. I cannot overemphasise the fact that I owe my present position to Mr. Kasturi’s encouragement and sagacious advice. I shall miss his handsome personality, gentle manner and able guidance.
