Guantánamo files

This refers to the editorial “America's shameful secret WikiLeaked” (April 28). It is shocking that America fosters a prison where it tortures the detainees in unimaginable ways. The Guantanamo Files have exposed America's double standards.

Thanks to WikiLeaks, we now know that ‘Gitmo' Bay is just another cogwheel in the “war on terror” propaganda machinery of the U.S. President Barack Obama promised to shut it down. What happened?

Ritvik Chaturvedi,

New Delhi

The Guantánamo ghost continues to haunt the civilised world. It may be recalled that on assuming the office of President, Mr. Obama promised to shut it down, saying it was against civilisational values. It is still not too late for him to act and win the hearts and minds of people across the world.

B.H. Shanmukhappa,

Davanagere

America is quick to give sermons on human rights to the rest of the world at every possible opportunity but it stands exposed now. The revelations show how public opinion has been hijacked by neo-conservative sections which feed on people's fear and insecurity to further their sinister agendas.

V.N. Mukundarajan,

Thiruvananthapuram

The editorial has rightly commended the stupendous work done by WikiLeaks in demystifying the Guantánamo myth. The documents expose the myth behind the U.S. claim of being in the frontline in the global war on terror. Guantánamo is indeed an insult to human civilisation.

V.K. Sathyavan Nair,

Kottayam

The U.S. claims that it functions on the basis of great values and patriotism but the WikiLeaks revelation has brought its image down. The UNHCR should make its presence felt by counselling the oldest democratic nation on the need to respect human rights.

Syed Khaja,

New Delhi
