I agree that withdrawal of the three per cent excise duty on SUVs, proposed in the Union budget, would catalyse the SUV-buying among the elite, jeopardising the diesel subsidy programme meant for the common man (“ >Keep the green tax ,” April 10). That said, with most automotive players reporting heavy losses in the quarter gone by, the sector needs a temporary reprieve till it is back on its feet with sustainable revenues.

One wonders why SUV makers should feel uneasy over the excise duty when they are going to pass the burden on to the consumers. Rich or poor, it is the consumer who suffers the most in random tax revisions.
