‘Green’ heart corridor

The article, “India’s heart is in the right place” (March 17), made me feel that I am connected to a humanity which is unfortunately getting divided in the name of religion, race, caste, community and hierarchy. The writer’s vivid recounting of the positive qualities of people in the backdrop of a life and death situation was rivetting. It is my strong belief that in India, all of us can coexist peacefully irrespective of religious, linguistic, cultural and political differences provided the political class does not treat these differences as divisive factors.

The last line was a bit jarring in an otherwise brilliantly presented article. It also set me thinking, in a related way, about the many deaths we face due to road accidents. Indiscipline on roads appears to be growing and road rules need to be inculcated in the minds of children. Even at this ripe age, I can happily recollect a documentary on road discipline that was screened for us in school.

The article was a breath of fresh air from the normal, mind-sapping news of violence and hatred that are fed to us every day through our dailies. We seem to exhibit extremes: selfless acts of kindness and concern which can give rise to hope in humanity, and also extreme acts of cruelty and brutality that bring out the beast in us. As the writer says, “some things are understood only by the gods. And perhaps even they cannot.”
