Great loss

The passing of spiritual leader Sri Sathya Sai Baba has deprived us of a great philanthropist par excellence. The free health care he provided to the multitudes and his drinking water projects are unparalleled. He did what governments are expected to do, without expecting anything in return.

Sri Sathya Sai Baba's devotion and selfless service to humanity added a special and distinct fervour to the spiritual ethos of the nation. He was a charismatic person with global appeal. He was above narrow and sectarian considerations and he treated humanity as one family.

The passing away of the spiritual colossus and philanthropist of worldwide eminence is a loss to not only his followers but also society as a whole. His compassion for people in need and philanthropic contributions in various fields are huge and memorable.

The demise of the spiritual leader is a great loss to the nation. Puttaparthi, a sleepy village in Andhra Pradesh, has become a global name because of his work. Words cannot console his devotees even though things have taken a natural course.

In 1963, at the age of 22 with an agnostic bent of mind, I went all alone to Puttaparthi, a small hamlet, when Sri Sathya Sai Baba's influence was just spreading. I stayed there for two days under the trees in front of Prasanthi Nilayam which was a one-storey building. The Chitravathi river meandered through the barren, rocky terrain. I had a darshan when the spiritual leader conducted bhajans . I never imagined that his philanthropic activities would scale such heights. Now all roads lead to the hamlet.

If Sathya Sai Baba could, single-handed, execute so many projects why aren't our governments able to achieve anything remotely comparable? The answer is simple. Sai Baba's service was selfless and without discrimination.

Questions have been raised about the future of the Sathya Sai Trust. We need to have faith in the members of the trust and hope they will be able to carry on with the good work with the same dedication and faith.
