The Hindu ’s special feature commemorating the birth centenary of C.N. Annadurai (Sept. 15) was commendable. It aptly highlighted the achievements of the leader, fondly called ‘Arignar’ Anna. He was an erudite scholar, outstanding orator, perfect parliamentarian, and a staunch supporter of the principles of Periyar. His contribution to the cause of the socially backward was reflective of his concern for the unprivileged sections. It would be no exaggeration to describe him as a messiah of the downtrodden. The centenary celebrations of the great leader will be more meaningful if his principles are followed.

I thank The Hindu for recollecting Anna’s contribution. The article “Significant contribution to Tamil theatre, cinema” was excellent. Anna was a distinguished leader admired for his clean thinking, calm nerves, and sound reasoning. He was in fact a historic personality who inspired everyone around him. He can be treated on a par with Edmund Burke and Winston Churchill for his oratorical skills. It is no exaggeration to say that his effective public speaking and thought-provoking writings brought the DMK to power in Tamil Nadu.

Anna was an inspiration to not only the people of his generation but also the future generations. His powerful oratory and his deep commitment to the ideals of social justice and self-respect made him a strong and popular leader. He respected people regardless of their political affiliation. Emulating the high political standards set by him would be the greatest tribute one can pay to him.
