Given the strained relationship between the Kejriwal government and the Centre, the arrest of Rajendra Kumar, Principal Secretary to the Delhi Chief Minister, comes as little surprise (“Arvind Kejriwal’s close aide held on graft charges”, July 5). This is a clear case of vindictiveness by the BJP which will only end up vitiating the spirit of federalism and the political atmosphere in the capital. Though there is no denying that corruption cases have to be dealt with firmly, one cannot help notice that the magnitude of graft in this case pales in comparison with cases such as the Mallya scam. It is a pity that the CBI continues to be used as the handmaiden of the government in tormenting the Opposition. The unseemly political war between the BJP and AAP should cease for the good of democracy and governance.

There is no doubt that the BJP’s intent is to leave all non-BJP ruled States in a state of disarray. It is surprising how a recipient of the Prime Minister’s award for excellence in public administration is arrested all of a sudden and even before the allegations are proved. The arrest and transfer of all close aides of Mr. Kejriwal too cannot be taken as a “routine procedure”. The BJP needs to give up its plan of crippling the Aam Aadmi Party.

After winning the Delhi election and forming the government, the AAP and the Opposition BJP pledged to work together in making Delhi a better place. Everything started off on a positive note, but soon descended into confrontation for the sake of opposing each other. Perhaps Mr. Kejriwal could have been more cordial towards the Central government keeping in mind the welfare of the citizens of Delhi.
