The songs of Shamshad Begum, who enthralled music lovers for decades, will remain etched in our memory forever. Her unique voice gave that extra special effect to songs. They were very entertaining and full of life.

A few of Shamshad Begum’s pleasing duets were Dekh chand ki ore musafir with Shailesh (Aag), Bhool gaye kyun deke sahara (Anokhi Ada) and Aayi sawan ritu aayi sajan (Mela) with Mukesh, Milte hi aankhen dil hua (Babul) with Talat Mehmood, and Leke pehla pehla pyar (CID) with Mohammed Rafi. Kishore Kumar was fortunate to sing the duet Mere neendon mein tum mere khwabon mein tum (Naya Andaaz) with Shamshad Begum, which turned out to be a great hit.

The space allotted to the passing of the versatile playback singer in The Hindu was well deserved. “The Memorable Ten” was splendid. One can add to the list prominent Shamshad numbers from Deedar , Baiju Bawra , and Naya Daur .

Her voice was very different from that of other playback singers. Though she is no more with us, she will be remembered for generations to come.
