The oil marketing companies' demand for an immediate hike in petrol prices may be fair and necessary. But the tone which they have used to bring pressure on the government is unacceptable. The oil bureaucracy should be taught to serve the nation. The government should not give in to the ‘do it or else' blackmail by the OMCs.

The Centre's indecision is infuriating. It is the government's responsibility to save the state-owned OMCs from making losses every day. The Centre should reduce the excise duty on petrol if it does not want the common man to be affected by the price hike. The States should share the responsibility by reducing VAT on petrol.
