Every citizen, no doubt, enjoys the freedom of speech guaranteed by the Constitution (“Even the chairman has the freedom of speech,” Feb. 27). But a person holding a responsible office like Justice Markandey Katju should exercise restraint. There is always a risk of his personal views being quoted as that of the office he holds. It is common among politicians and Ministers to make comments on issues and their political parties distancing themselves from the remarks. A constitutional authority dragging himself into controversy in the name of freedom of speech is certainly not healthy.

I welcome Justice Katju’s arguments. There was a huge uproar over his recent article on Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. Justice Katju is right and he deserves to be congratulated.
