It is time we stop indulging in mere rhetoric on International Women’s Day, being celebrated on March 8, and show that we care when the new Parliament convenes. The Women’s Reservation Bill has yet to be passed despite there being more women leaders than before in the electoral fray. When we have powerful leaders like Sonia Gandhi, Sushma Swaraj, Jayalalithaa, Mamata Banerji, Mayawati and Vasundhara Raje, voters should push them to take the initiative in forming a “women’s front” after the 2014 election results are declared, which should try and ensure greater women’s representation. Such a meticulously formed bond for five years will take the largest democracy in a new direction.
