Fisherfolk and elections

April 14, 2016 11:28 pm | Updated 11:28 pm IST

The fishing community in Tamil Nadu from the three districts of Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari has been repeatedly let down by the ruling dispensation both at the State and Centre (Tamil Nadu editions, “Include fishermen in the list of candidates”, April 12). It is a shame despite the community being traditionally loyal to the Dravidian majors in the first two districts, and the Congress in Kanyakumari. The community is taken for granted despite there being no permanent solution to the issue of attacks by the Sri Lankan Navy. Its demand for a seat or two is quite justified. The community, which is by and large poor, should now exercise its franchise with care and due diligence.
