In managing to have an FIR filed against Sheila Dikshit over the CWG streetlight project issue, the Aam Aadmi Party has added another feather to its cap and bolstered the anti-corruption movement. That the CBI has declared as many as nine out the 19 registered FIRs closed supports the Arvind Kejriwal government’s stand that the Centre has no intention to punish the culprits. Most of the investigations conducted by Central agencies — such as the CBI and the CVC — have turned out to be a mere eyewash, aimed to hoodwink the voting public.

The FIR against Ms. Dikshit is welcome. How does one justify the arbitrary U-turn her government took to award the contract to a company earlier found to have been unworthy? That corruption has taken place is undeniable. The filing of the FIR should be seen as a bold, rather than vindictive, move. Antagonising the Congress, on whose mercy the AAP has formed the government in Delhi, would hardly be advisable under usual circumstances. However, there are any number of cases against politicians pending throughout the country. Very few of these have reached their logical conclusion. Hopefully, this case will not join that dubious list.
