Fighting cancer

Hollywood star Angelina Jolie’s Op-Ed article, “My medical choice” made compelling reading, her most memorable quote being “Life comes with challenges.”

Her surgical procedure is in sharp contrast to the cosmetic procedures celebrity women undergo to enhance their looks. By going public with her procedure, she has done her bit to remove the stigma associated with breast cancer and reassure patients that there is still a life to be lived.

However, it is easier said than done in India where women, especially the poor, face discrimination. Millions of women vulnerable to breast cancer lack the wherewithal to pay for the required tests and procedures. State intervention is necessary to help them.

It is strange how some people react to things. A reader has said Ms Jolie (May 16) appears to have become paranoid. How can a surgery undergone by an individual who is said to carry a high risk of developing cancer be termed paranoia? Undergoing such tough treatment and having the courage to go public about it is to be lauded.
