I was taken aback on reading the report that one of the country’s largest stationery manufacturers has identified ‘skin’ with a light pink stick of wax crayon, and that a 19-year-old has taken the matter to the consumer court because he feels it is racially offensive (June 8). I extend my support to the law student. At the same time, I am saddened that even after so many reform movements against racism, we have not achieved much.
It is we, the people, who should take the lead in putting an end to the spread of ideas of racial supremacy and “our perceptions of beauty.” Racism isn’t born; it is taught and needs to be rooted out.
