Fanning hate

The report, “Muslim man hacked, burnt in Rajasthan” (December 8) was disturbing. I have no words to describe the agony, anger and despair felt by this most cruel act. Religions are supposed to promote brotherhood among communities. Now they appear to be serving only extreme ends. We can survive without religion but we cannot without being humane.

The brutal and inhuman killing of the 50-year old migrant labourer should be condemned and the culprits brought to book. Perhaps the reference to the man’s community in the news headline could have been avoided as it would appear to be inflammatory and lead to a stoking of communal passions. There are sober ways of highlighting the heinous crime. We are human beings first, and where community or religion comes later.
