Any historical event must be considered from a wider perspective, one that looks at politics, economics and its social, religious and cultural aspects (“The changing face of history,” Dec.19). Recent studies have changed the dimensions of history. One also has to consider western ideas of history. India has a glorious past and there needs to be much work to reveal a true picture of the past.

The objective facts of history should be placed on a different footing from their interpretations. One cannot be a substitute for the other. It is a fact that Indian civilisation was overrun by conquerors of different hues. There could be different points of view as to how and why it happened. However, creating an illusion of superiority by focussing on stray incidents and personalities from history could be a setback. In order to create a worthwhile future, the right lessons should be learnt from history, which can be done through scientific and realistic studies.
