The landslide victory of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in the local body elections of Tamil Nadu is indeed significant (“An extended honeymoon,” Oct. 24). It shows the voters' faith in the ruling party and Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. They believe she will ensure a clean, efficient and corruption free governance. All that the people want from their local bodies are basic civic services. If they can get their building plans approved, birth and death certificates and other services such as water supply and sewerage connection without undue delay, middlemen and ‘speed money,' they will be more than satisfied.

S. Nallasivan,

AIADMK candidate Saidai Duraisamy's victory with a margin of over 5.2 lakh votes in the Chennai Mayoral election is another feather in the cap of the party and its leadership considering that Chennai has been a DMK stronghold from the days of Kamaraj. The AIADMK's clean sweep in the local body elections shows that the electorate has reposed full confidence in Ms Jayalalithaa's leadership and capabilities.
