The report, “CCTV must for Bangalore schools” (July 27), came as a relief. Among other measures taken, disallowing drivers from talking to children within the school premises is a good move. Steps should also be taken to prevent teasing in school buses. Teachers travelling in school buses usually occupy the front seats and are either busy talking to one another or correcting answer sheets, oblivious what happens behind them. They can sit at the back of the vehicle so they can keep an eye on the children.

The plan to install CCTV cameras in schools is rather amusing. What is it that the Bangalore Police are trying to do? Will this ensure safety for students? Some time ago there was a robbery at an ATM in Bangalore, despite the presence of CCTV cameras. Till date the culprit has not been caught. Even in the Chennai Central station twin bomb blast case, the CCTV footage did not provide any valuable clues. Do the police want to play safe rather than instil confidence in the public by taking strong measures? Also, there are no adequate background checks on teachers and staff employed by schools. Their background should be verified before being appointed.
