The new agreement between India and the U.S. is imperative and strategic for both countries to combat the burgeoning economic and military might of China (Editorial, April 14). Ostensibly, the Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement looks like a move by India to offset the Chinese plan of establishing a port in Pakistan. But in countering China this way we must take care not to antagonise Russia, which has been India’s indispensable partner. The government should adopt a policy of balance as in today’s geopolitics nothing is black and white. There are only shades of grey.

History has taught us that whenever America expresses friendship, it cannot be taken as a handshake. Rather, it may even be an attempt to pull and then push the other side into a deep pit. If India gives in and starts allowing American warships and warplanes in our harbours and airfields, it will only end up antagonising Russia and angering China. The present love America has for India is to only counter China and its ambition of becoming a superpower. The South China Sea area is on the boil and America wants to take China head-on. In all this, it will be India that will suffer.
