Energy security should form a major part of the agenda of the newly elected government (“ >Handling the energy crises ,” April 18), with the focus on renewable energy resources. The fruitful use of schemes like MGNREGA to construct biogas plants at affordable rates for the needy will fulfil the fuel requirements of the rural population. By adopting such clean energy technologies, safeguarding the environment will be taken care of.

Whether it is the coal industry or the oil and natural gas industry, reforms should be undertaken in a way that the socio-economic needs of the nation as well as environmental safeguards are met. These may include privatisation of the coal industry, adherence to Energy Information Administration standards, a transparent land acquisition process, an improved New Exploration Licensing Policy, Public-Private Partnership in the oil and natural gas industry, and improved and supplemented use of renewable sources of energy.
