The article “Khaki death squads” (“Sunday Story,” July 7) has exposed the deep-rooted nexus between the top echelons of the Gujarat government and senior police officers in the State in extrajudicial killings. While the argument that the police officials in question committed such encounter killings to please the top man cannot be wished away, the role of the State government in such cases also deserves a thorough probe. The way sincere police officers were hounded out for not toeing the official line and that loyal police officers were rewarded is one more example of a violation of laws and ethics.
