E-governance thrust

July 28, 2014 01:16 am | Updated 01:16 am IST

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to launch an e-governance platform to encourage public participation in governance is a welcome move (“PM launches e-governance platform,” July 27). www.mygov.nic.in, could now supplement www.pgportal.gov.in, which registers public grievances.

But there are teething problems. The registration process seems to be cumbersome with passwords requiring several conditions which are difficult to follow. The National Informatics Centre, which manages the website, should make it more user-friendly. In the morning of July 27, the portal stopped people from registering, saying the daily limit had been crossed. This makes little sense for a country with a large population. If Facebook and Twitter can have unlimited postings from individuals across the world, there is no reason for these portals to have such limits.

The initiative taken by the Prime Minister to launch a new portal for participatory governance is both good and appreciable, but the name given to the portal seems partisan. It should be named ourgovt.nic.in to show that it is really participatory and serves the intended purpose.
