EC-BJP showdown?

The issue of denial of permission to the BJP for an election meeting in Varanasi may be resolved, but the party appears to be increasingly on the warpath when it comes to dealing with the Election Commission (“ >BJP, EC headed for showdown ,” May 8). The episode shows that political parties must show maturity and respect the wisdom and judgment of a constitutional body like the EC, whose work so far has been exemplary.

Considering the vituperative remarks that have emanated from the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate during his campaigning, the Election Commission has had no option but to disallow the party from holding a public meeting in Varanasi. It is safe to conclude that the election body is doing what it deems right in order to ensure that people can vote without fear and favour. The party’s charge of “bias” levelled against the EC is uncalled for.
