Duflo interview

>Economist Esther Duflo (Oct. 1) is right in laying stress on the need for randomised control trials and the advantages in testing the efficiency of various schemes. The failure of well-devised schemes and programmes falling apart can be attributed to there being a lack of courage and also political will.

The fact that well-laid policies and schemes have been successful in certain States and have failed in others should not deter policymakers. The right to education has not yielded the expected results, while the Public Distribution System needs to be revised further in order for it to be more efficient. This can be possible only if people are themselves made accountable.
