The obnoxious comment made by Dayashankar Singh, the BJP's former vice-president in Uttar Pradesh, against one of the country’s prominent women leaders the BSP’s Mayawati, is a grim pointer to the abysmal level which public discourse in the country has reached over the years. Gone are the days of witty repartee and comment along with constructive and healthy debates in Parliament and our Legislative Assemblies on the issues confronting the country. Increasing instances of character assassination are cause for concern. One has the right to criticise one’s opponents, but with great dignity and decency (“ > Why wasn’t BJP man fired: Mayawati ”, July 22).
