This refers to the article, “ >For human resolve, not miracles ” (April 28), an eye-opener on the blind support to inhuman practices in the name of religion. All religions are about making life beautiful for mankind but some unscrupulous groups try to indulge in divide-and-rule tactics or discriminate against marginalised groups in the name of religion. We the people have to unite against any kind of discrimination in the name of caste, religion or race. We have to fight this battle in the name of humanity and not in the name of religion.

I am reminded of Kanaka dasaru who made efforts to put an end to age-old, obsolete social practices. In a poem “Kula Kula Kula vendu hodedhada diri,” he asks humans not to segregate themselves from one another, because every human is born the same way, everyone eats the same food and drinks the same water; hence, none is superior or inferior to another. In general, all the evil traits spelt out in the article will have no place if everyone comes to realise that god whom they worship is one and the same.

Religious institutions should not be biased because it is not only illegal and inhuman but also a threat to the integrity of our nation. It also produces evil forms like divisive caste politics which are a blot on our democracy. We need strict and stringent laws not only to prevent them but also to sow the seeds of change in the minds of people.
