It is very disappointing to note that in spite of the announcements of various schemes to address issues of highly unequal development of minority communities, the successful implementation of the same is hitting a roadblock. It should be attributed to some insincere and discriminatory attitude of the mindsets of certain sections manning the institutions in our system. The government should consider this aspect and set up a foolproof mechanism at the local level, consisting of watchdog citizens' committees, to monitor and take up such issues, with the recalcitrant institutions. In the absence of such efforts, Muslim minorities would continue to suffer discrimination, as highlighted by Vidya Subrahmanian (July 30). The resulting dissatisfaction among the youth would be exploited by communal organisations to misguide the community as a whole. This should not be allowed to happen.
