The Congress party’s statement, that “ >the government is out to destroy Nehru’s legacy ” (Nov.14) is amusing. How is it possible to destroy the work of great leaders like Nehru who have left an indelible imprint on the country? In spite of Nehru being criticised for some issues, he is undisputedly the architect of modern India. The Congress should not use him as an excuse to gloss over its defeat in the general election. The party needs to introspect over its own sorry state of affairs instead of being envious of the Prime Minister, who has emerged as the hope of the nation.

The Gandhi family in particular and Congressmen in general appear to be upset with the Narendra Modi government according much importance to Sardar Patel’s contributions to this country. The party appears to be seeking vengeance for its humiliating defeat in the general election. Nobody can snatch away the legacy of Nehru. The birth centenary celebrations of Nehru should not be converted into an anti-Modi/anti-BJP platform.

The Congress cannot claim exclusive access to the Nehruvian legacy. Nehru was part of a pantheon of great leaders who had a vision of building a modern India. The Congress party needs to be broad-minded.
