Deplorable

Abhijit Mukherjee’s remark that the women who protested at Jantar Mantar and India Gate against the gang rape of a 23-year-old in Delhi were “dented and painted” (for which he has apologised) will certainly not help the Congress which is in neck deep in trouble over the manner in which it has handled the aftermath of the incident.

The party high command should issue instructions to its MPs to keep quiet in public. That our politicians are insensitive to issues related to the common man is proved time and again by their utterances.

A famous son-in-law recently called us “mango people.” Now a famous son — of President Pranab Mukherjee — says women protesters are “dented and painted.” One wonders how a mature democracy can tolerate such indifference and insensitivity from leaders.
