Demerger

July 23, 2013 02:01 am | Updated 02:01 am IST

The Telengana issue has been suppressed by successive governments but the aspirations of the people of the region could not be suppressed. They have suffered because of the creation of the State of Andhra Pradesh in 1956. The merger of Telangana with Andhra was neither an arranged marriage nor love marriage; it was a forced marriage. Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru said at the inauguration of Andhra Pradesh that the regions could demerge if the “marriage” failed. The issue is not bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh to create a new state but demerger of two regions.
