As pointed out in the editorial, “Unpardonable sin” (May 31), and as vindicated by studies like the recent Columbia University law school study, there is always the danger of the death sentence being wrongfully awarded to an innocent person after faulty investigations. Such a possibility, which is very real as proved in Carlos Deluna's case, should doubly strengthen the case for abolishing the death penalty.
The immediate need to announce a moratorium on executions gains prominence in view of the acquittal of many persons wrongly charged with terrorism.

Punishment must make a criminal realise the value of life. The death penalty cannot achieve this objective.
