Death of Sherpas

As a former trekker in the Himalayas, I have tried to study the dynamics of avalanches and the disasters that they can cause. Twelve brave Sherpas perished in a summer avalanche in the Himalayas (“Mount Everest avalanche kills 12 Sherpas,” April 18) and a few more are probably dead, but their bodies have not as yet been traced. I am personally overwhelmed by this because I came to know some Sherpa families very well, and learned to love them and respect them. They are tough, lovable and loyal.

My fear is that more avalanches will probably come. I saw this on the website. I do hope that the Indian government, the concerned State governments and the Government of Nepal will issue warnings to climbers and to the Sherpas to be extremely vigilant. I think some climbers are trapped alive on higher altitudes, and may not be able to either go up or come down for sometime. I hope the Army will also help out, and if necessary, supplies will be airdropped to those who are stranded.
