Incidents of child abuse are increasingly in the news (“A cruel neglect,” July 30). This is because parents, teachers and the common public are indifferent to children. Parents have no time to ask them about the day’s events. School buses should have CCTV cameras. The public should keep an eye on those who interact with children unnecessarily and report them to the police. Child helpline numbers should be publicised and classes on ‘good touch’ and ‘bad touch’ conducted in schools.

The Kakinada and Kolkata incidents point to the declining standards in education. Parents should look for not only infrastructure and swanky laboratories in schools before admitting their children but also find out about the behaviour of the school staff.

Resort to corporal punishment is but a ruse to hide ineffective teaching methods and inadequate resources. Most students do not misbehave with a teacher who is knowledgeable. Focus should be on improving the quality of teachers and adopting more interactive teaching methods.
