“India not to back sanctions” (March 20), on the Indian stand not to support sanctions sought to be imposed on Russia by a select group of countries led by the U.S., constitutes a pragmatic approach after all. India needs to stand by the side of Russia not just because of the nuclear or defence ties but because Russia has a true friend in India all these years. Russia must be complimented for asserting what it felt right and contesting several and repeated warnings by the U.S. I do not think that any country should impose sanctions over a decision that comes after the will of the majority of the people of a country has been expressed in an open manner.
