Creating a defence university

August 11, 2016 12:21 am | Updated 12:21 am IST

Instead of setting up a National Defence University, it would have been more desirable to expand the canvas and structure of the existing National Defence College, New Delhi, with faculty members drawn from outside the defence establishment as well without disturbing the present command structure (“A fleeting opportunity”, Aug.10). National security, conceptually, is much broader than merely defending our territory. Such an institution should also be at the centre of an exchange of ideas germane to national security among people from different walks of life and with adequate experience in such matters. Creating a monolith such as INDU will only make it another post-retirement holiday home for those who are well connected.
