Court’s ‘parental advice’

The agony experienced by children when their parents’ marriage becomes shaky is bound to leave them scarred (“Your children need you both”, SC [Supreme Court] tells estranged couples”, April 11). Marriage is fast becoming an endangered institution and divorce seems to be the only remedy/first resort of quarrelling couples. Couples must honestly agree to disagree in spite of irreconcilable differences for the sake of their children.

Of late, tolerance levels in a marriage have dropped and seeking a divorce or separation, the moment differences crop up, is common. The “trend”, encouraged by what one sees in the electronic media, needs to be curbed. When the country as a whole has so many unresolved problems and issues, one wonders why the time and energy of Supreme Court judges should be spent on such issues.
