As a lawyer, I fail to understand why the Supreme Court advised the Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka to meet and arrive at an amicable solution to the Cauvery water dispute. It is well known that no statesmanlike approach based on a give-and-take policy can be adopted by either of them, given their political compulsions. The Supreme Court instead should discharge its constitutional responsibility under Article 131(c) of the Constitution to answer the questions of law and fact involved in the Cauvery river water-sharing dispute.
