I totally disagree with the views expressed in the editorial, “An unequal contest” (March 31), on the contest in Varanasi between Mr. Narendra Modi and Mr. Arvind Kejriwal. Should Mr. Kejriwal be written off even before the contest has begun? Was he not the same man who dethroned a veteran like Sheila Dikshit? Mr. Kejriwal may or may not win, but he certainly has a major advantage — his simplicity, his identity and his beliefs. Let us not forget that the AAP was dismissed several times in its climb to political victory and recognition. The advantage the party has is that the intellectual class is gradually moving to accept it. National level politics is a different ballgame. Winning three times in Gujarat does not guarantee a national win.

Mr. Modi did not graduate to the position he is now overnight. It is the result of hard work, his belief in the party cadre and tolerance to face many struggles and criticism. As the Telugu saying “ Inta gelichi, racha gelavali ( one has to win at home to win outside”) goes, Mr. Kejriwal has miles to go.
