Congress' future

The future of the Congress may look bleak but it cannot be written off easily (“ >The Congress’ moment of truth ,” Aug. 11). It is the only all-India party that has a reasonable support base in all the States, including Jammu and Kashmir. If it can usher in real talent instead of perpetuating the dynastic cult, it can still spring a surprise. It is obvious that Rahul Gandhi has failed to impress the downtrodden and the middle class.

The Congress has been steadily losing ground. When a party gets more and more centralised, ignores its grassroot workers, regional party leaders, goes out of sync with the people, and takes policy decisions on the basis of outdated ideology and slogans, people turn to other parties they can identify themselves with. The BJP, on the other hand, has been able to foster democracy conducive to the growth of local leaderships in the States, and identify with national interest.
