The UPA government should address soon its dilemma over whether or not Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Sri Lanka. That its political needs are taking priority over the security and strategic interests of the country is unfortunate. The coalition era has given a regional colour to national policies. While greater participation by the States is welcome in a federation, it should not harm the national character. Tamil Nadu must appreciate that only a healthy debate can bring a solution to any problem.

The political parties of Tamil Nadu have demanded that the Centre boycott the CHOGM summit. There is a shrill cry that Sri Lanka should be expelled from the Commonwealth itself. Participation in the meet is vital to issue the necessary directive to the island nation to organise Tamils and ensure resettlement in a better manner.

It is no secret that the UPA government turned a blind eye to the killing of unarmed Tamil civilians during the last phase of the Eelam war. The media has provided enough proof of this. It is immaterial whether Dr. Singh attends CHOGM; it makes no difference.
