China’s objection to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s recent visit to Arunachal Pradesh for election campaign is not in order. It is unfortunate that Beijing still considers the State a “disputed border area.” India has done the right thing by asserting that it is an integral part of our country.

The people of Arunachal Pradesh, by turning out to vote in large numbers, have spoken. China cannot object to Dr. Singh’s visit to the State as it is under the administration of our government. It should sort out the border issues through talks with us.

The reaction of the Chinese government to the Prime Minister’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh is disturbing and does not augur well for bilateral relations. India is far behind China in all aspects and hardly constitutes a threat to it. The past few months have been very stressful and, hopefully, things will improve on the bilateral front.

Arunachal Pradesh has been part of India since Independence (it was earlier known as NEFA) and many elections have taken place there. People of the State have sent their representatives to the legislature. Our forces did not occupy it forcibly. The government should be cautious in dealing with the border problem and ensure that it does not sacrifice any territory.

If China’s comments on Dr. Singh’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh were shocking, New Delhi’s reaction — expressing disappointment and concern — was far more shocking. Where is our country heading? Will our politicians unite to tackle grave problems or come together only to hike their pay and allowances?
