Cheer for BJP

September 17, 2009 01:01 am | Updated 01:01 am IST

This refers to the editorial “Some cheer for BJP in bad times” (Sept. 16). It is too early for the BJP to rejoice over the results of the recent by-elections and assume that it is recovering lost ground. Elections to the Maharashtra, Haryana, and Arunachal Pradesh Assemblies will be the real acid test for the party. The by-election results, however, have given the BJP an opportunity to reinvent itself by making appropriate changes in policies and programmes.

After the debacle in the Lok Sabha election, there was bickering within the BJP followed by the expulsion of Jaswant Singh. But the results of the by-elections show that the party cannot be written off. If it overcomes its problems, it can stage an effective comeback.
