‘Caliphate’ formation

India needs to keep an eye on the fast-changing equations in the Arab world (“Battling for Islamic space, imagination,” July 9). Diplomatic actions, especially when they concern safeguarding our national interests and oil sources, can be facilitated by a good understanding of the situation. ISIS can pose a threat to Indian interests if there is reconciliation between ISIS and Al-Qaeda.

The writer must be praised for his lucid account of the emergence of ISIS and its vital comparison with Al-Qaeda. Both claim to be waging a jihad. Clearly, this is a dangerous situation that civilised society faces. Fundamentalism, radicalism and fanaticism should never ever be allowed to flourish. All right-thinking people should unite to save the Arab world in particular from falling into an abyss.
