In the run-up to the general election in 2014, Narendra Modi came across as a candidate who wanted to work without motives and whose primary focus would be development. But he has proved once again that he is no better than any other average politician. Expanding his Cabinet is fine but its timing and the motive of preference for States that go to the polls soon proves that he is only playing to the gallery to woo voters (“Eye on poll-bound States, Modi to expand Cabinet”, July 5). A ministerial berth should be given to someone solely on merit.

By expanding the Central Cabinet to such a jumbo size, the BJP has proved that it is no different from any other political party. The act of expanding the government to accommodate such an oversized Cabinet runs contrary to the party’s pet slogan of “less government, more governance”. Is it achche din for the people or politicians?
